3/8 - The Chess Players (1977) with Ranjan Mukherjee - Set in 1876, during the decline of the Mughal Empire in India, "Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players)" by Indian director Satyajit Ray follows two noblemen absorbed in their game of chess, oblivious to the political turmoil around them. As the British seek to annex the rich province of Awadh, the film highlights the noblemen's neglect of duty and relationships as British troops march in and the Nawab is deposed. Adapted from Munshi Premchand’s short story, The Chess Players offers a glimpse into colorful Mughal life and culture while exploring timeless lessons on the fall of empires.
