Sometimes I think there is nothing more dangerous to one’s equilibrium as a night at home with a Netflix account.
That said, this last Saturday in a fit of boredom I went surfing and found the little gem that is Next starring Nicolas Cage. Based on a Philip K. Dick story, the premise is that Cris Johnson, a Las Vegas magician, actually has a power of his own: he can see 2 minutes into his own future. He survives with his not-very-good act and a low level gambling habit. However, big things are changing in Las Vegas-a terrorist cell has smuggled a nuclear device into the city and the authorities want Cris to find it.
Initially, Next seems to be an action adventure movie with Cage doing his trademark “everyman” routine. However, don’t forget this was a story written by Philip K. Dick, a man notorious for doing mind bending concepts, and you can easily see that Next is a movie that cloaks something much, much weirder. I can’t say much about that, because I will ruin the surprise, but I will say that don’t watch this before you go to bed because you will have the weirdest dreams ever.
