It’s me…Miss Jenn!

Jenn, our children's librarian

Hello everyone, it’s me, your very own Head of Children’s Services. I am finally getting around to joining the blogosphere with my first post. I have been agonizing over what to write about, this sets the tone for what you think of me. If you’ve met me, you already have a first impression, otherwise welcome to my world.

What to tell you? I could write a review of a fantastic new children’s book like, Firefly Hollow by Alison McGhee: This is a beautifully written story about two insects, a river vole, and a young boy all struggling with how to fit in the world. First we meet firefly, she wants to fly to the moon, and then cricket, who wants to be a baseball catcher. Then we meet sweet river vole, the last of his kind, learning everything he needs before unmooring his boat. The boy we meet is missing a friend. Sweet, kind, and loving is how I would describe this story. It is full of new friendships and learning about oneself. If you enjoy animal fantasy, with color illustrations, check this one out.

Don’t you just love the cover.

I could write about the wonderful summer reading club we had and tell you that over 1,000 kids participated. Over sixty children came to the Superhero Training, and Science in the Summer participants learned all about the world’s oceans. We do have size large t-shirts left, so if you didn’t turn your log in, you can still get a t-shirt and free book.

G98102-5Instead, I could tell you about programs lined up for this fall, like: Dress-Days and Chinese Language & Culture for Kids. Dress-Up Days are held once a month on a Sunday and Monday. We provide the costumes and you and your children provide the imagination (you can come in your own costumes if you want). Studies have shown that dramatic play is important to a child’s development, it helps them develop communication skills, critical thinking, and much more. Chinese Language & Culture for Kids is a wonderful introduction to the Chinese language, taught by an experienced teacher. Trust me, you don’t want me to teach the class. I will be there, listening and learning right alongside the kids. We do have an adult class as well, check the calendar for more information.

Would you like me to write about myself? Nah, not this time, but I’m happy to answer any questions you or your child has. I look forward to writing more of these. I’ll be sharing book reviews, advice and resources for parents, and maybe a funny story or two; like the time I…

You’ll just have to wait for that one.
