Description: Celebrate Juneteenth, and explore the African American songs of slavery & excerpts from the Black opera Vanqui in this live, interactive performance of The Bamboo Man and the Drinking Gourd. All ages welcome!

Presented by Opera North, Inc, this interactive performance engages children and family members with sing-along, call-and-response music activities. Learn new musical words and concepts while actively participating with the performing artists. This work was created by Aryssa Leigh Burrs & Leslie Savoy Burrs.

Performing Artists:
Aryssa Leigh Burrs (mezzo soprano) has a Masters of Music in Voice and Opera Performance from Northwestern University. Most recently, she was a Resident Artist with Opera Columbus-Capital University, and teaches music and vocal instruction to children and college students. She had the honor of performing for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Leslie Burrs (flute and bamboo flutes) is an award winning composer, flutist and educator. His productions have been performed internationally and throughout the United States, including I Can’t Breathe and the African American opera Vanqui, for which he received the National Opera Association’s Legacy Award.

Carol Evans (piano) is a seasoned soprano and assistant professor of music at Gwynedd-Mercy College, School of Arts and Sciences. She directs The Voices of Gwynedd, a 100-member choir representing full and part-time students, faculty, staff and alumni of Gwynedd-Mercy College.
