Rethinking the Art Canon

Oct 15, 2021 to Oct 15, 2021 1 - 2pm

Date: Fridays 10/1-10/29 (5 Weeks)
Time: 1-2p
Age Group: Adults 18+

Program Format: Live via Zoom

Description: Why do we learn about some artists and not others? What determines whether a work of art is exhibited at a museum, featured in a show, or explained in a textbook? What can we learn from cultural artifacts and works of art by artists that are less known or outside of “the canon” (a standard set of works accepted through convention)? This course will include short introductions to works of art, artists or objects with which you might not be familiar paired with ones that are better known to address these questions. Turn your microphones and your cameras on! Participation is essential to a good discussion of our cultural history.

Instructions for joining the Zoom meeting will be provided upon registration.

Instructor:  Alice Price, PhD teaches modern and contemporary art and architecture at Temple University, Tyler School of Art and Architecture and at Jefferson University, College of Architecture and Built Environment. She is a College Board AP Art History Reader and has also served as a supervisor for Secondary Education teaching certification. Prior to pursuing her doctorate, Price earned a master’s degree in education from La Salle University, a master’s degree in history from American University, and taught history in private and public secondary schools for twenty years.
