Every day I am asked if the library is moving and when. We are currently scheduled to move in mid to late spring, but that is subject to change. There are many moving parts and weather to consider. Here is an update about what is happening in the children’s department to get ready. Currently the Head of Children’s Services (ooh, that’s me) is trying to prep the department to physically move. What does that entail? Quite a bit. My current focus is our book and media collection. Me, and my team, are carefully and methodically making sure each collection is at its optimum before it is moved. While it is a time consuming task, collection development is one of my favorite parts of the job.
In addition to prepping the collection of books and other items that you check out, I am also prepping the items that we use in programs. I will go through everything to get it organized before it is packed to move. If you have seen our storage room you know it is not a small job.
While completing all of that and continuing to offer programs, I am meeting with designers and our leadership team to make decisions about the physical space in the new building. Do I like the layout of the books? Does the location of that collection make sense? What do you need in your program space? Do you like these chairs? Should we move that section of shelves? It is a fun, educational, and stressful process.
We will continue to offer select programming as long as we can and our space/toys will be available until the move. I want to make sure that we do this right. You are my number one priority and making sure you have the best books, the best space, and the most prepared staff in the new children’s space is my focus. You are always welcome to ask me how the prep is going and I will happily give you the latest update.
