20 Years Later: September 11, 2001

Though it’s been 20 years since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 in Somerset County, PA, the impact on our nation can still be seen today. To commemorate this tragic day and the ways in which we recovered, the UDPL in partnership with the UDSD is offering a writing and art contest. Upper Dublin residents are invited to submit poetry, fiction, an interview with reflection, or 2-D visual arts in response to one of the prompts below. All entries will be considered for display at the Upper Dublin Public Library.

Contest Rules

  1. All entries are due August 20, 2021 at 11:59 pm.  Submissions must be made online through the contest submission form.
  2. In order to submit an entry, you must be a resident of Upper Dublin.
  3. There are 3 categories for judging: grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and adult. 
  4. All submissions must be original work that has not appeared elsewhere in print or is commissioned to appear elsewhere.
  5. Participants may submit only one entry in the Writing or the Art categories, but they may submit in both categories. However, each participant is only eligible to receive one prize even if submitting in both the categories.
  6. Submissions are made with the understanding that UDPL and UDSD reserve the right to re-publish winning entries as well as the names and likenesses of winners.
  7. All entries will be considered for public display at the Upper Dublin Public Library.

  • What does it mean to be patriotic?
  • How can we honor and remember the victims of  9/11?
  • How do communities move forward after a tragic event?
  • How did 9/11 bring out the best in people?
  • Where do you see examples of courage, resilience, and selflessness?
  • What was life like before 9/11? How did it change after 9/11?  
  • Why should you and future generations of students learn about 9/11 and its legacy? 
  • What is a hero and how can people show gratitude to those who act heroically in their own communities?

Writing Requirements

  • All writing submissions must be accompanied by an image that reflects the piece. To avoid copyright infringement, please use images found at Unsplash or Pixabay.
  • Poems should be no longer than 250 words. 
  • Short stories should be no longer than 1,000 words.
  • Interview/Reflection submissions should be no longer than 1,500 words and must contain two parts:
    • Part 1: An interview you have conducted with someone who is at least 30-years-old and can share their vivid, personal recollections of where they were and what they experienced on September 11, 2001. This interview must be no longer than 1,000 words and must include the specific questions you’ve asked and the exact responses that your interviewee has given.
    • Part 2: A follow-up essay in which you reflect on this interview. You may choose to answer any of the following questions (or others of your own choosing) in your reflective essay: 1) What did you learn from this person? 2) What details really stood out for you during the course of your conversation? 3) What surprised you? 4) What were your thoughts about 9/11 prior to this interview? 5) Now that the interview is over, have your thoughts, opinions, impressions or feelings changed? This personal, reflective essay should be no longer than 500 words.

Visual Art Requirements

  • Original art submissions of any 2-D medium are accepted.
  • Must be accompanied by an artist’s statement of no more than 500 words explaining the intention of the work.
  • Artwork should be submitted electronically in one of the following file formats: jpeg, png, or pdf. A high-resolution scan or photo is preferable.
  • Original artwork must be dropped off to the library before September 1 to be included in the 9/11 Gallery Walk.
